    Pro Tip: wash your face thoroughly before you use microscope eyepieces, this will reduce dirt deposits on your lenses. Humans, as well as all mammals in general, are quite greasy creatures.

    All microscopes these days are compound. All it means is that lenses have more than one element, rather than a tiny glass ball as the first ones were, centuries ago. Seriously though. The big manufacturers are VERY expensive. You’re not going to get anything from them for $1,000, or €1,000.

  • @melgross
    @melgross 2 дні тому

    With two objective lenses on stereo scopes, it’s when you get closer that the photo problems become serious. If we’re talking about a three dimensional specimen, each lens is looking at an opposite angle and side. From higher up, one lens sees both sides. But when you get close, that lens progressively sees less of the opposite of the specimen. So the single objective scope is a better choice for that. Yes, it’s more expensive, and that’s why they still make less expensive designs. By the way, these big names don’t cost several thousand Euros or dollars, they generally cost tens of thousands.

    As good of a deal as it is, I'm not gonna buy from amazon. There is no way they are making profit with such prices. All they do is trying to kill other brands with the money from different products they are selling, which are overpriced since they already aquired a monopoly. I rather pay a fair price for an independent brand that is probably better for its employees too.

    @Microbhunter May I suggest one day to make a 4-5 minutes video about the ergonomic of using a microscope. For example, put the scope on book or something to get the eye piece at the right high. To avoid bending your back and get pain. How to dispose stuff around you to be efficient.

    I can find cover glass for 1$ for 100 units. At one cent a piece, I can afford discarding them. I still wash the slide (even if it's about 10 cent a piece). It's easy and quite safe to wash compare to cover glass.

    It's 4h AM and I'm looking at manure compost!!!! I just got my new SWIFT 380B few hours ago and can't stop tracking all the living creature on my slide!!! First, I've looked at a Canadian 20$ bill. Lot of colour, safety protection and unexpected texture in 3D ink! I was quite happy with the overall build quality and amazing picture with 4x and 10x objectives. Not so much with 40x (I later realise it's because I was in air, not water yet) Then, soil sample #1 (dry soil/dirt mixed with water) Beautiful sand crystal and general soil structure. And I found my first UFO! I don't know what it is, but it was small and flying all around VERY fast (could barely track him at 400x). It was a great workout to get used to the left-right-up-down-focus and switching objective when I lost it. It show good picture quality on 40x objective. Honestly, not as good as I hope for, but still can't complain for 203$ Canadian (138 Euro or $147 US) (shipping Included). I still have to make some adjustments/alignment and a DIY darkfield to get the best experience from my hardware. BUT THEN.... I switch to soil sample #2 (3 years composted organic horse manure mixed with water) Brouaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmm! A gazillion of theses UFO flying in different direction like there would be no tomorrow!!!! I laughed out loud! I've watched A LOT of soil microscopy on UA-cam and I never saw such high concentration of life... EVER! There was way too many different kind of living thing per mm2: paramecia, ciliate, many different moving or not moving bacteria and algia, polen, yeast, fungi/mycelium, soil cluster, various living diatoms, various slow/very slow/fast/very fast moving hunter of different size and form, blob kinda thing (look like white blood cell) and the list goes forever and forever!!!! All the above within 4cm2 on the slide's surface or less than 0.001 g of solid compost sample on the slide. I have a metric ton in my garden; I wish they all pay one cent each for the rent!! For anybody who have access to a microscope, go find your local farm and look for old composted manure (or maybe the commercial bagged version is decent quality?) If you like this chanel and don't have a microscope yet; get a SWIFT 380 (or similar price range microscope) and a box of 72 slide + 100 cover slide. We should take a moment to realise... I'm almost 50, living in Canada. I'm so thankful to live in a time where high technologie and knowledge is affordable. Internet, free access to knowledge, computer, camera, microscope, phone, 3D printing/laser, endless free software/application, youtube, wikipedia, universal language (english) to share with different culture, arduino, medical health, plane, space exploration, wifi, car safety, freedom of speech, new variety of plants/fruits and the list will never stop. When my grandmother was a kid.... Most of the above was not even in the wildest sci-fi book! I won't be there in the next century or millenium... I can fathom what will be the reality then. Maybe they will get that dam hoverboard or flying car working with anti gravity instead of lame propellers! If you read this, you probably have less than few decade to live... So, have fun, try new thing and enjoy life as much as you can.

    I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist and I agree with everything you said. Normally, human blood is sterile and there should be no bacteria present unless the person has sepsis. Seeing bacteria in the patient’s blood using LBA is troubling. There is a proper tests to detect bacteria in the blood. In addition, we have to stain the slide with Wright Stain and count the different white blood cells under the microscope to determine if the WBCs are out of range. We don’t just eyeball the amount of cells. We actually have to count 1 by 1 to get the accurate number. A lot of people are deceived by the LBA.

    • @barrypeterson1586
      @barrypeterson1586 13 днів тому

      blood is not sterile.. When you stain the blood it kills the bacteria. LBA you are not killing anything.

    Good explanation, I agree - don't be afraid to buy a 2nd hand microscope of a quality brand, such as Zeiss Std 16 possibly with the Phase condensor and objectives. It might be 50 years old, but if it was used in a laboratory environment, for example asbestos fibre counting it will be in good condition. You'll save heaps and furthermore, these are solid pieces of equipment, with the image quality ultimately dependent on the objectives and they will usually have a binocular or trinocular head. I have two Zeiss's like this myself and they are well ahead of any cheap Indian or Chinese 'scope - you know the units that advertise as having 2000x magnification (that "feature" unfortunately catches the eye of the novice) Oh, if you cannot find a trinocular, the cheap eyepiece adaptors to fit your mobile phone work well for photography. Finally, not wanting to be too critical, may I suggest that you don't cut your hair yourself - that fringe is a shocker.

    No need for a petri dish. Get a sample, add water, wait for it to decompose, and then check your sample. So far most explode in bacteria. Interestingly enough I have one sample that exploded in eukaryotic life and the bacteria are quite absent since they are a food source. But usually, it becomes a bacteria playground.

    I'm a huge proponent of buying the cheapest version of most things for any hobby until you know exactly what you need and why you need it. However, your excellent videos were thorough enough to teach me exactly what I needed before I spent a dime, and I went straight for the scope I knew would be perfect for all my needs right away (sw380T). Thanks for that! Particularly helpful were your videos about not paying attention to scopes claiming 3000x or whatever nonsense, and also the advice about almost all optics being of similar quality with black models signifying a slightly better version. Well worth the Patreon support!

    Testing to see if any reply to lyme disease comments since we all know it's the elephant in the room and doctors don't address it due to fear of losing their license. You will see more and more commercials about Lyme in the next 5 years as science "introduces" it to the world. Med school which is usually 10 years behind actual real time data will start teaching about it in 2030. No reply = factual statement.

    I used the clear plastic and paper method, I am perplexed. 4x and 10x objectives I get dark field, if I use 40x or 60x it looks like bright field with the light turned down too dim. I have tried sizes ranging from 15mm all the way to 24mm. I can get oblique illumination to work beautifully, which looks amazing I have to say.

    Do you know if there is any way possible to mount a phone on the photo tube? I don't want to lose an eyepiece, I want to view through the eyepiece and record passively as I am observing. Microscope cameras are so expensive and from what I have gathered, a phone camera usually makes better video anyway.

    I have been occasionally giving my objectives small puffs of canned air to knock off any loose dust, all seems well, I can see cilia and flagella in bright field.
